Kioxia begins sampling UFS 5.0 embedded flash memory

Kioxia has started shipping evaluation samples of UFS 5.0 embedded flash memory targeting next generation mobile devices and high end smartphones with on device Artificial Intelligence capabilities.

Kioxia Corporation has started shipping evaluation samples of embedded flash memory that are compatible with the next generation UFS standard, UFS 5.0, which is currently being standardized by JEDEC. The move signals an early push to support upcoming mobile platforms that demand significantly higher storage performance and improved power efficiency.

UFS 5.0 is a new standard for embedded flash storage currently being developed by JEDEC to meet the performance requirements of next-generation mobile devices such as high-end smartphones equipped with on-device Artificial Intelligence functions. The standard is designed to provide faster data access and smoother multitasking, addressing the growing need for rapid processing of locally executed Artificial Intelligence workloads, high resolution media, and advanced applications.

UFS 5.0 utilizes MIPI M-PHY version 6.0 for the physical layer and UniPro version 3.0 for the protocol. M-PHY version 6.0 introduces the new HS-GEAR6 mode, theoretically supporting an interface speed of up to 46.6 Gbps per lane; with 2 lanes, UFS 5.0 can achieve approximately 10.8 GB/s of effective read/write performance. These capabilities position UFS 5.0 embedded flash memory as a key component for future smartphones and other mobile devices that require both high bandwidth and low latency storage.
