Qualcomm completes acquisition of Alphawave Semi to boost data center expansion

Qualcomm has closed its acquisition of Alphawave Semi ahead of schedule, positioning the company to accelerate its data center strategy with new high-speed connectivity capabilities and leadership changes.

Qualcomm Incorporated announced that it has completed its acquisition of Alphawave IP Group plc, known as Alphawave Semi, approximately one quarter ahead of schedule. The deal is intended to accelerate Qualcomm’s expansion into the data center market by adding key assets and expertise from Alphawave Semi. As part of the integration, Alphawave Semi CEO and co-founder Tony Pialis will take charge of leading the Qualcomm data center business.

According to Qualcomm president and CEO Cristiano Amon, Alphawave Semi’s experience in high-speed connectivity technologies is a strategic fit for Qualcomm’s existing compute portfolio. He stated that Alphawave Semi’s expertise complements the Qualcomm Oryon CPU and Hexagon NPU processors, aligning with the company’s focus on advanced data center infrastructure. The combined capabilities are positioned to enhance Qualcomm’s ability to design and deliver complex, high-bandwidth systems for cloud and enterprise customers.

Amon emphasized that Qualcomm delivers high-performance, energy-efficient compute and Artificial Intelligence solutions, and he said that the addition of Alphawave’s technologies will strengthen Qualcomm’s platforms. He added that these integrated solutions are expected to optimize performance for next-generation Artificial Intelligence data centers. With Alphawave Semi now under Qualcomm’s umbrella and Tony Pialis leading the effort, Qualcomm is presenting the acquisition as a catalyst for its ambitions in data center compute and connectivity.
