Stellantis and Pony.ai partner to advance robotaxi development in Europe

Stellantis and Pony.ai signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding to co-develop and test SAE Level 4 robotaxi-ready vans, beginning real-world trials in Luxembourg before expanding to European cities from 2026.

Stellantis and Pony.ai announced a non-binding memorandum of understanding to accelerate robotaxi development in Europe. The collaboration will integrate Pony.ai’s autonomous driving software with Stellantis’ AV-Ready Platform in battery-electric, medium-size vans, targeting safe, scalable and efficient urban mobility. Pony.ai will lead the effort through its European division headquartered in Luxembourg, and both companies will jointly develop and test SAE Level 4 vehicles designed for hands-off, eyes-off operation.

Initial testing will use Peugeot e-Traveller vans in Luxembourg in the coming months, with a gradual rollout to additional European cities starting in 2026. The trials will focus on validating safety, performance and regulatory readiness, positioning the partners to deploy competitive autonomous mobility services across the region. The AV-Ready Platform is engineered to support Level 4 capabilities through technology updates and includes key enablers such as system redundancies and compatibility with advanced sensor suites to integrate an autonomous driving software stack.

The partnership centers on light commercial vehicles, a segment where Stellantis, through its Pro One business unit, holds a leading position in Europe. The companies highlighted the segment’s versatility and total cost of ownership advantages, noting that the vans can support a range of services from compact robotaxis to multi-passenger vehicles carrying up to eight people. While the initial focus is on LCVs, the collaboration is structured to lay groundwork for broader applications in autonomous mobility, spanning services for both goods and people.

Stellantis chief engineering and technology officer Ned Curic said driverless vehicles can offer safer and more affordable urban mobility and cited the company’s AV-Ready Platforms and partner ecosystem as key enablers. Pony.ai founder and CEO James Peng pointed to Stellantis’ European footprint and portfolio as strategic assets for expanding Pony.ai’s technology in the market. Together, the companies aim to pair Stellantis’ manufacturing scale and vehicle platforms with Pony.ai’s autonomous driving technology to accelerate robotaxi deployment in Europe.
