Sage debuts artificial intelligence tools for small business accounting teams

Sage introduces Sage Copilot, an Artificial Intelligence assistant for small and medium sized business accounting teams that speeds workflows, flags budget variances and delivers trusted how-to guidance.

Sage has begun rolling out Sage Copilot, a new tool aimed at accounting and payroll teams at small and medium sized businesses. Announced for early adopters in the U.S. and the U.K., Copilot is built to surface actionable insights such as budget variances and to answer practical how-to questions with clarity. The company says the goal is to help teams work more efficiently while improving accuracy and compliance, and Sage is engaging customers directly to refine the experience.

In a news release Sage described Copilot as a way to ´work smarter and faster, streamlining tasks and uncovering insights that drive meaningful business results´. The launch comes amid research showing rapid uptake of machine learning and related tools in finance: roughly 80% of finance chiefs are using these technologies to reclaim time for higher value work, and 89% report that technology and global complexities have expanded their responsibilities. Dan Miller, executive vice president of Sage´s financials and enterprise resource management division, said the company is aiming to free teams from routine tasks so they can focus on strategic initiatives and long term growth.

The introduction of Copilot also ties into broader trends in accounts payable and automation. Recent PYMNTS Intelligence and Finexio research found that 79% of chief financial officers see machine learning integration as essential for accounts payable operations. Firms that automate AP processes often cite lower fraud risk and better control over cash flow. Paper checks remain a significant vulnerability, accounting for about 60% of fraud cases in B2B transactions, and more than one fifth of mid sized firms expect automation to play a key role in fraud prevention.

Beyond security, businesses report tangible operational benefits from automating payables. Around 44% of mid sized companies expect cost savings and improved cash flow management from automation, while 53% of AP leaders highlight the importance of enhanced reporting and analytics for faster decision making. Sage is positioning Copilot and other enhancements as tools to help SMB finance teams increase productivity, maintain compliance and redirect time toward growth and profitability.
