Sony is preparing a major image quality update for the playstation 5 pro, with an upgraded pssr 2.0 scaler scheduled for release in Q1 2026 that is described as finally unlocking the full hardware potential of the console. The rollout of the new pssr, which stands for playstation spectral super resolution, will begin globally on february 27 for ps5 pro owners. Resident evil requiem will be the first title to support the advanced version of the technology, positioning capcom’s upcoming horror game as the showcase for the enhanced upscaling system.
Following the initial launch, sony plans to extend support for the upgraded pssr to a broad catalog of existing titles. According to the company, the upgraded pssr scaler will soon also be usable with any of the over 50 games that have so far implemented the original pssr games, ensuring that many recent releases can benefit without requiring bespoke patches. A system update will be shipped in march that will let players enable an option titled “enhance pssr image quality,” which is designed to apply the upgraded model to older games that already use the first generation of the technology.
Sony describes the new pssr as taking a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm, signaling a significant rework of its upscaling pipeline rather than a minor iteration. Capcom’s masaru ijuin, senior manager of engine development support section, r&d foundational technology department, said that with resident evil requiem the team focused on enhancing the presentation quality of the protagonist through an upgraded version of the re engine to deepen player immersion in horror. Each individual strand of hair and beard is rendered as a polygon so it can move realistically in response to body motion and wind, and ijuin credited the upgraded pssr features for making this level of fidelity achievable, noting that hair and other fine textures are typically difficult to upscale.
