Marketers Overtrust Artificial Intelligence, Risking Brand Integrity

A majority of marketers have strong faith in Artificial Intelligence, but flawed outputs and lack of oversight are hurting brands.

Marketers are rapidly embracing artificial intelligence tools, with 63% already using generative artificial intelligence and 85% deploying it for content creation—a rate well above the US workforce average. This willingness to adopt new technologies has been a longstanding hallmark of the marketing sector. However, artificial intelligence introduces unique risks and unpredictable outcomes that demand a more deliberate, informed approach compared to past technologies.

Despite widespread adoption, many marketers have misplaced confidence in artificial intelligence outputs: 87% trust its accuracy, yet research reveals that over half of artificial intelligence-generated content contains significant errors, and 91% have at least minor issues. These inaccuracies can damage brand trust, diminish marketing effectiveness, or—in extreme cases—result in legal repercussions, as seen in the Air Canada chatbot case. Beyond accuracy, artificial intelligence content can descend into awkward or off-brand messaging, exemplified by Meta’s chatbot missteps. Furthermore, human-generated marketing materials continue to outperform artificial intelligence-created content in both engagement and conversions.

To mitigate risks, experts recommend understanding the limitations of artificial intelligence, applying it with intent, and maintaining active human oversight. Generative models typically produce ´average´ content based on existing data and cannot capture the distinct nuances of a brand´s voice or values. As such, marketers should consider restricting artificial intelligence use to low-priority, non-differentiating tasks—like drafting internal documentation—while human teams manage customer experience, strategic messaging, and revenue-driving activities. Continuous human supervision remains critical for public-facing outputs, ensuring facts, empathy, and brand alignment are upheld. Ultimately, as artificial intelligence reshapes marketing possibilities, a balanced approach—rooted in transparency, purpose, and human review—will be essential for protecting brand integrity.
