Krutrim launches India’s first multilingual large language model

Krutrim, founded by Bhavish Aggarwal, unveiled a voice-enabled multilingual large language model designed for India´s diverse linguistic landscape and emerging Artificial Intelligence infrastructure needs.

Krutrim, an artificial intelligence startup founded by entrepreneur Bhavish Aggarwal, has introduced what it calls India’s first multilingual large language model. The model can generate text in 10 Indian languages and includes voice-enabled functionality. It also understands mixed-language usage such as Hinglish, a hybrid of Hindi and English, which the founder framed as a core capability tailored to local communication patterns. The launch positions Krutrim as a homegrown entrant in a fast-moving field that has been energized since the debut of ChatGPT.

Beyond the model itself, Krutrim is developing an ecosystem of supporting hardware and infrastructure. The company is working on data centers, supercomputers and custom chips to lower the cost of compute and to keep more of the stack within India. The roadmap published around the launch lists a beta chatbot release slated for January, prototypes of servers expected in mid-2024, and production of those servers by the end of 2025. Krutrim also plans to roll out an enterprise product called Krutrim Pro in the next quarter, signaling a push into business and organizational use cases as well as consumer-facing applications.

The move reflects a broader strategic push in India to build local artificial intelligence systems and reduce dependence on technology from the united states or china. Startups and academic groups have accelerated work on Indic large language models, aiming for smaller, more cost-efficient architectures that reflect India’s cultural and linguistic diversity. Aggarwal described the new model as ´uniquely Indian´, emphasizing adaptability to regional languages and speech patterns rather than a one-size-fits-all global model.

Industry observers say the arrival of locally developed LLMs could reshape adoption across sectors. Brands and retailers are already reconsidering operations from customer service to inventory decisions in light of generative model capabilities. Krutrim’s combination of language flexibility, voice features and an integrated hardware plan could make it a notable player in the domestic market. For now, the company’s timelines and the planned enterprise offering give observers concrete milestones to watch as India builds more of its artificial intelligence stack at home.
