How IBM is reshaping enterprise workflows with Artificial Intelligence

IBM is methodically infusing Artificial Intelligence into everyday tasks and end-to-end workflows, pairing strict governance with new team structures and skills to turn experimentation into measurable business value.

The conversation between Stack Overflow leaders and IBM executive Matt Lyteson outlines how IBM is approaching enterprise-wide adoption of Artificial Intelligence, treating it as both a productivity tool for everyday tasks and a transformative force for core business workflows. Lyteson describes IBM’s strategy as “injecting Artificial Intelligence into every single workflow” while focusing relentlessly on outcomes such as higher revenue growth, better operational efficiency, and reduced risk. He emphasizes that Artificial Intelligence gives CIOs a chance to revisit the classic question of technology value, distinguishing between small gains like saving 15 minutes on a presentation or email summarization and larger, workflow-level changes where the impact is measured in revenue, per unit cost, and risk posture.

One of IBM’s flagship examples is its Ask IT system, which replaced much of its level one and level two support with Artificial Intelligence in about 100 days and now serves “every single one of our 280,000 IBM employees” as the first line for IT help. Lyteson explains that Ask IT uses Artificial Intelligence at the front end to handle common requests and at the back end for tasks like multilingual translation, freeing human agents to focus on more complex problems and increasing their job satisfaction. A second critical initiative is IBM’s enterprise Artificial Intelligence platform and an intake-to-value mechanism that slashed a complex, multi-team review process from a “two-week process” to provisioning an environment for new Artificial Intelligence projects “in about five or six minutes.” That same pipeline connects to data privacy reviews, Artificial Intelligence ethics oversight, platform ownership, and value tracking, so the cost and impact of every use case are visible from provisioning to business outcomes.

To avoid a repeat of the early cloud-computing era, IBM is tightly managing who can build Artificial Intelligence agents through an “Artificial Intelligence license to drive,” which certifies that creators understand data privacy, security, and system impact and will maintain what they build. Lyteson says this license, combined with a “hyper-opinionated” enterprise Artificial Intelligence platform built on tools such as WatsonX Orchestrate, WatsonX Data, and WatsonX Governance, lets teams experiment rapidly while preserving control, safety, and integration with critical systems like CRM, productivity suites, and IT service management. IBM is also leaning heavily on “Artificial Intelligence fusion teams” that pair domain experts, such as procurement professionals, with technologists from the CIO organization so that subject matter experts learn prompt engineering and “vibe coding” while engineers deepen their understanding of business workflows and data. Across initiatives like the Ask IBM assistant, governance via WatsonX Governance, and metrics such as Drift, thumbs up and thumbs down feedback, CSAT, incident resolution times, and unit costs, IBM is building a feedback-rich, continuously monitored Artificial Intelligence ecosystem that balances rapid innovation with strong guardrails, risk management, and a disciplined focus on measurable value.
