GlobalFoundries announces funding expansion for U.S. chip facility upgrades

GlobalFoundries is committing additional billions to strengthen North American chip production and fuel next-generation research in areas like advanced packaging and silicon photonics, reinforcing semiconductor resilience.

GlobalFoundries has announced a substantial increase in its investment efforts aimed at expanding and modernizing its North American chip manufacturing capabilities. The company earmarked significant financial resources to accelerate the growth of its existing facilities and directly increase domestic semiconductor output. Notably, a large portion of these funds is targeted at supporting advanced research and development projects, with a particular focus on packaging innovation, silicon photonics, and the advancement of gallium nitride technologies—areas vital to the next wave of semiconductor applications and integrated circuits.

Key partners benefiting from or contributing to this expanded initiative include industry giants such as AMD, Apple, General Motors, NXP Semiconductors, Qualcomm, and SpaceX. These collaborations are positioned to elevate the competitiveness and reliability of the domestic semiconductor supply chain. Alongside research, GlobalFoundries will funnel resources into upgrading and enhancing production at its prominent foundry sites located in New York and Vermont. These upgrades are designed to cater to increasing industry demand and to ensure that infrastructure keeps pace with both current and projected requirements.

Despite the sizable financial commitment, GlobalFoundries leadership refrained from providing a specific timeline for project completion, citing variable demand as a critical factor in the pace and sequence of capital deployment. CEO Tim Breen emphasized a pragmatic investment strategy, balancing anticipation of market needs with prudent project execution. Looking ahead, the company detailed plans for an advanced packaging and photonics center at its Malta, New York, campus, reinforcing GlobalFoundries´ reputation for mature technology offerings. In the wake of industry speculation about possible mergers, the executive team reaffirmed their focus on organic growth, stating they are not pursuing a tie-up with UMC at this time. This stance preserves the company’s emphasis on established production nodes, especially 28 nm and larger wafers, which serve the backbone of various sectors reliant on robust, scalable semiconductor manufacturing.
