Framework launches second-generation laptop 16 with upgradable NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070

Framework updated its Laptop 16 with AMD Ryzen Artificial Intelligence 300 Series processors and a new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Graphics Module, offering backwards-compatible upgradeability and revised thermal and display features. Pre-order pricing is not stated and first shipments are scheduled for November.

Framework announced a second-generation laptop 16 that pairs AMD Ryzen Artificial Intelligence 300 Series processors with a new NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU. Pre-orders are open now but the starting price is not stated. Framework said first shipments will begin in November. The company framed the update as proof of its generational upgradeability promise, a feature the original laptop 16 introduced in 2023 alongside fully customizable input options.

The new graphics module uses NVIDIA´s Blackwell architecture with 8 GB of GDDR7 memory and is claimed to deliver a 30 to 40 percent increase in gaming framerates compared with Framework´s original Radeon RX 7700S Graphics Module. Framework spent two years working with AMD, NVIDIA, and Compal to develop the module and made it fully backwards compatible so existing laptop 16 owners can install the upgrade. Framework will continue to offer the Radeon RX 7700S Graphics Module as a configuration option for users who prefer AMD, noting the maturity of AMD´s open source Linux drivers.

Hardware changes accompany the GPU swap. The GeForce RTX 5070 Graphics Module enables display output and power input over the rear USB-C port, and the discrete GPU can send a display signal directly to the internal panel through a mux on the mainboard. Framework updated its 165 Hz 2560 by 1600 panel to support NVIDIA G-SYNC. The thermal system was revised with Honeywell phase change thermal interface material and a reoptimized fan blade geometry and controller integrated circuit to reduce noise while supporting 100 watt sustained TGP. These updates aim to preserve Framework´s repairability and upgrade path while improving sustained performance and display compatibility.
