EU Plans AI Gigafactories to Compete with US Efforts

The European Union is investing €20 billion to establish AI gigafactories in a bid to compete with the US.

The European Union is planning to invest €20 billion in building several state-of-the-art supercomputer facilities to support Artificial Intelligence (AI) development across the continent. This initiative, commonly referred to as the establishment of AI gigafactories, is aimed at bolstering Europe´s capabilities in AI technology to compete more effectively with the United States.

Up to five sites have been earmarked for the new facilities, which will house power-intensive supercomputers and data centers. These installations are expected to drive significant advancements in AI research and deployment, enabling European countries to embark on ambitious AI projects, commonly dubbed as AI ´moonshots´.

This strategic investment by the EU reflects a commitment to nurture a robust infrastructure capable of supporting breakthroughs in AI and closing the technological gap currently seen with other global leaders in the field, such as the US and China.
