EIC Accelerator propels startups and SMEs with major funding under Horizon Europe

The EIC Accelerator empowers disruptive startups and SMEs to scale breakthrough innovations with grants, investment, and tailored support through the Horizon Europe programme.

The EIC Accelerator, a flagship initiative under the European Union´s Horizon Europe Framework Programme, delivers targeted funding and investment to support high-potential startups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that are driving innovation in Europe. The programme aims to empower companies with breakthrough products, services, or business models, enabling them to create new markets or disrupt established ones. With a focus on projects at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 6-8, the EIC Accelerator prioritizes applicants whose innovations involve significant risk—often too great for purely private investment—while demonstrating strong ambition for rapid scale-up.

Applicants may receive a lump-sum grant of up to €2.5 million for innovation activities to be completed within two years, complemented by equity investments of €0.5 to €10 million managed through the EIC Fund. The 2025 budget allocates €250 million for the EIC Accelerator Challenges, targeted at projects aligning with defined topics, and €384 million for the Open component, open to all fields of technology. Further support includes extensive coaching, mentoring, access to global partners, and connection to innovation ecosystems. The process for securing funding is streamlined into four steps: a short proposal, a full business plan, a pitch interview with the EIC Jury, and subsequent negotiation and due diligence. Fast Track and Plug-In schemes allow direct progression for proposals stemming from other EU or certified national innovation programmes.

Eligibility extends to single startups, SMEs, spin-outs, individuals willing to launch an SME, and small mid-cap companies, with additional provisions for applicants from third countries (who must relocate before submitting a full application). Special attention is given to encouraging female-led companies. Applicants are allowed to enter only one proposal at a time and may reapply after receiving feedback. Those proposals meeting excellence criteria but not recommended for immediate funding may be awarded a Seal of Excellence to aid in securing alternative investment. A robust support structure—including National Contact Points and Business Acceleration Services—is available to assist applicants at every stage of their journey through the EIC Accelerator.
