Dow Chemical Advances Plans for Nuclear-Powered Texas Plant

Dow Chemical aims to pioneer nuclear-powered industrial operations at its Texas plant in collaboration with X-energy.

Dow Chemical and X-energy have initiated a significant project to power a chemical plant in Texas using nuclear reactors, representing a first in the industry. The plan involves installing advanced nuclear technology at the factory, which primarily produces plastics and other materials. This initiative has the potential to revolutionize energy consumption in industrial processes, particularly for power-intensive operations like data centers.

The project took a step forward with the filing for a construction permit with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, marking a critical milestone. X-energy´s involvement with the commission dates back to 2016, and the US Department of Energy´s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program has provided crucial funding support. The Seadrift, Texas plant, slated to host the reactors, currently operates on natural gas and requires a more sustainable and modern energy solution.

The Seadrift facility will implement four X-energy Xe-100 reactors, designed to deliver both high-temperature steam and electricity with safety and efficiency. This Reactor model is smaller than traditional nuclear setups and relies on an innovative helium cooling method. Deployment of this technology not only highlights the shift towards lower-carbon emissions but also paves the way for future industrial applications of nuclear power. The integration of nuclear energy on-site illustrates a potential model for industries seeking to decarbonize and is projected to become operational in the early 2030s.
