Apple partners with GlobalWafers America to supply 300mm silicon wafers

Apple will source 300mm silicon wafers from GlobalWafers America´s Sherman, Texas plant to bolster US semiconductor manufacturing under the CHIPS for America Program.

GlobalWafers America LLC, the US subsidiary of GlobalWafers, has signed a supply pact with Apple to provide 300mm silicon wafers for iPhone and iPad devices. The wafers will be made and shipped from GlobalWafers´ facility in Sherman, Texas. These 300mm wafers feed production lines for a range of chips, including leading-edge nodes, mature-node logic and memory semiconductors, and are central to Apple´s device supply chain plans.

The announcement highlights GlobalWafers America´s role in US onshore semiconductor capacity and its participation in the CHIPS for America Program. The company is currently the only global producer of advanced 300mm wafers enrolled in that program, the statement said. Reuters reported the unit received just over an undisclosed amount from the US CHIPS Act in June, roughly half of a grant it secured last year; the company and reporters have not disclosed exact figures in the released material.

Company leaders framed the deal as a turning point. Mark England, president of GlobalWafers, said ´our new partnership with Apple, America´s most important end-user of silicon, is a powerful market signal that the entire semiconductor supply chain is now back in the U.S. in full force.´ Chairwoman Doris Hsu added that she was ´thrilled that silicon from GlobalWafers America will be found in many of these incredible products.´ Apple chief operating officer Sabih Khan described the collaboration as part of the company´s wider American manufacturing push and referenced an announced multibillion-dollar commitment to the US over coming years.

The move comes as the current administration advances measures to support semiconductors, including an expanded advanced manufacturing investment credit and reforms to CHIPS for America. GlobalWafers positions itself as the third-largest global wafer supplier, operating 18 manufacturing and operational sites across three continents and nine countries. For Apple, the supply deal strengthens near-term device production resilience and aligns with broader industry efforts to rebuild domestic manufacturing capacity and create local jobs.
