The University of Bristol, alongside eight other leading UK institutions, has announced the launch of the Spärck AI scholarships, a prestigious new funding opportunity aimed at future pioneers in Artificial Intelligence and STEM fields. Named in honor of the influential British computer scientist Karen Spärck Jones, these scholarships will offer full financial support for students pursuing master’s degrees, covering both tuition and living costs. The initiative echoes the ambition and prestige of the Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright scholarships, elevating the UK’s competitive edge in fields at the core of technological transformation.
At least 100 promising undergraduate students from the UK and internationally will benefit from these scholarships, commencing studies in October 2026. Beyond financial backing, recipients will gain exclusive access to leading industry partners, mentorship programs, and work placements at major organizations including the UK’s Artificial Intelligence Security Institute, Darktrace, Faculty, and Quantexa. With £17.2 million in government funding, the Spärck AI scholarships serve a key recommendation in the government’s Artificial Intelligence Opportunities Action Plan, specifically aiming to broaden participation among students from lower-income backgrounds who might otherwise find advanced study out of reach.
Professor Evelyn Welch, University of Bristol Vice-Chancellor, emphasized the institution´s remarkable legacy and infrastructure in Artificial Intelligence, highlighting the presence of Isambard-AI, the UK’s most powerful supercomputer, and its leading doctoral and research hubs. As an anchor partner, Bristol will co-design and co-fund the scheme, collaborating with other elite institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, and more. The university is also unveiling four new master´s programs for the 2026/27 academic year: artificial intelligence, engineering with artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence for business, and artificial intelligence for medicine and health. The initiative´s integrated partnership model with forward-looking companies such as PolyAI, CausaLens, Beamery, and Flok underscores a national commitment to developing a skilled workforce ready to shape the future of technology and society.
