OpenAI unveils o3-pro model and major ChatGPT updates

OpenAI launches o3-pro, its most advanced reasoning model yet, and rolls out improvements across ChatGPT models and features, including Advanced Voice and new coding capabilities.

OpenAI has introduced o3-pro, a powerful reasoning model now available to Pro users in ChatGPT and via API, marking a new peak in capabilities spanning coding, math, science, and visual perception. Engineered to provide longer, more reliable, and thoughtful responses, o3-pro excels in domains requiring accuracy and robust reasoning. In expert evaluations, o3-pro consistently outperforms its predecessors, particularly in science, education, business, and programming tasks, and is rated higher for clarity and comprehensiveness. It inherits broad tool access, enabling actions like web search, file analysis, and visual reasoning, although response times may be longer than o1-pro. Safety details align with the broader o3 model series, and a technical limitation currently disables temporary chats. Image generation and Canvas are not yet supported in o3-pro.

The update cycle also brings significant enhancements to ChatGPT’s Voice Mode. Advanced Voice now features more natural intonation, realistic cadence, and emotional nuance, creating smoother, more human interactions. A new language translation capability allows users to switch languages seamlessly throughout conversations—making in-the-moment language assistance practical for travel or international collaboration. While the feature is widely available to paid users, OpenAI acknowledges minor limitations such as intermittent audio quality drops for certain voices and rare hallucinated sounds. Fixes and further improvements are in progress for these Voice features.

Beyond o3-pro and Voice, OpenAI has delivered a series of high-impact model updates in 2025, including the release of GPT-4.1 for all paid ChatGPT users, the introduction of the highly efficient GPT-4.1 mini as a lightweight fallback model, and important upgrades to GPT-4o enhancing its system instructions, memory management, problem-solving in STEM, and communication style. Notably, o3 and o4-mini models raise the bar in analytical rigor and cost-efficient reasoning, with state-of-the-art performance on benchmarks like Codeforces, SWE-bench, and AIME. Other recent advances include rolling out canvas collaboration, richer image analysis for multimodal inputs, and the launch of tasks for scheduled automation within ChatGPT. Across the board, OpenAI continues adapting its models with sharper instruction following, refined response formatting, and ongoing tuning based on user and evaluator feedback. Model evolution is guided by thorough safety evaluations and a commitment to balance capability with reliability.
