UK Parliament opens workforce inquiry on Artificial Intelligence

A UK Parliament committee is examining how Artificial Intelligence is changing business and work, with a focus on both economic opportunity and labour disruption. The inquiry is seeking evidence on government priorities as adoption expands across the economy.

The Business and Trade Committee has launched an inquiry into Artificial Intelligence to assess the opportunities and costs for businesses and the workforce, and to make recommendations on Government priorities. The review is focused on how Artificial Intelligence is affecting UK business and the UK workforce as it becomes capable of handling a broader range of tasks.

Artificial Intelligence has advanced rapidly in recent years, supported by major improvements in computing power, data availability and the emergence of large language models. Adoption has increased, but uptake remains uneven. As adoption accelerates, Artificial Intelligence is expected to have significant impacts on UK business and the UK workforce, reshaping work. It will prove a growth industry in itself, enhance productivity, disrupt existing industries and business models, cost jobs, and create jobs.

The Government’s Artificial Intelligence Opportunities Action Plan includes a twentyfold expansion of public Artificial Intelligence hardware by 2030 and seeks to leverage private investment through initiatives such as the US-UK Tech Prosperity Deal (with £30 billion committed by major technology firms). The committee is inviting submissions from anyone able to respond to the questions in its call for evidence.

This inquiry is currently accepting evidence. Evidence can be submitted until Friday 3 April 2026. The committee is seeking views to better understand how Artificial Intelligence should be addressed in policy as its role in business and employment continues to expand.
