Nscale, Aker, and OpenAI announce Stargate Norway artificial intelligence superfacility

Stargate Norway sets a new European benchmark, aiming for 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs powered by renewable energy for secure and scalable Artificial Intelligence workloads.

Nscale Global Holdings, Aker ASA, and OpenAI have unveiled plans for Stargate Norway, a major Artificial Intelligence infrastructure project situated in Narvik, Northern Norway. This initiative targets an unprecedented 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs by the close of 2026, with scalability as a central objective for future phases. The facility will be powered exclusively by renewable energy sources, aligning with Europe’s strong commitment to sustainable development and data sovereignty. Delivering on security and efficiency, Stargate Norway is tailored to address sovereign Artificial Intelligence needs across Europe, ensuring compliance with strict regulatory standards prevalent within the continent.

The projected data center is set to deliver an initial 230 megawatts of capacity and could expand by a further 290 megawatts in subsequent stages. This ambitious scale positions Stargate Norway among the largest Artificial Intelligence infrastructure investments in Europe to date. Nscale, serving as the global infrastructure leader for the project, combines forces with industrial conglomerate Aker and Artificial Intelligence pioneer OpenAI to set the foundation for robust, next-generation computing power. Their collaborative approach aims to create a future-proof infrastructure for both private and public sector Artificial Intelligence applications, emphasizing flexible and secure access.

Significantly, Stargate Norway represents OpenAI’s first data center endeavor within Europe and marks the debut site under its recently launched ‘OpenAI for Countries’ program. This development underscores OpenAI´s broader strategy to offer regionally customized infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of governments and organizations while maintaining compliance with local governance frameworks. Positioned as a renewable-powered, scalable solution, Stargate Norway could serve as a blueprint for future Artificial Intelligence superfacilities in Europe and beyond, as the demand for powerful, sovereign-aligned Artificial Intelligence processing continues to surge.
