Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming service may soon introduce a new advert supported access tier, following user reports last week of ‘one hour of ad supported play time per session’ messages appearing when launching cloud play sessions. Jez Corden of Windows Central, citing unnamed industry contacts, reports that this points to a near term expansion of the existing subscription based streaming model with an additional product tier. The insider sought clarification on recent leaks about an advert supported branch before publishing a weekend report describing what could be a major shift in how Xbox Cloud Gaming is accessed.
According to Corden’s source, ‘(adverts) will appear separately on Xbox Cloud Gaming, for those who have purchased Xbox games digitally, but don’t have Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft has hundreds of games available to buy via Xbox Cloud Gaming, but as of writing, you need at least one tier of Xbox Game Pass to access them. This session-based ad-supported access tier will change that.’ A late October New York Times article had already hinted that Microsoft was exploring a ‘free ad-supported’ cloud gaming access tier, and the latest leak appears to align with that earlier reporting. The new model would effectively decouple ownership of digital Xbox titles from the requirement to maintain an Xbox Game Pass subscription in order to stream them over the cloud.
Corden suggests that Microsoft leadership is motivated by the need to justify the ongoing cost of expanding and maintaining cloud service focused data centers, with an ad supported tier helping to ensure that ‘Azure inference remains high and consistent,’ and reducing idle capacity. Uptake of the Xbox Cloud Gaming service, and similar streaming platforms, is expected to increase in 2026 and beyond, with the article framing this growth as a side effect of an ongoing computer memory and storage crisis. Multiple gaming outlets have linked the advert supported leak to the upcoming Developer_Direct showcase, where Xbox is set to spotlight Fable, Forza Horizon 6, and Beast of Reincarnation. The report speculates that a smaller update on adjustments to Xbox Cloud Gaming, including the new access tier, could be quietly added alongside the larger game previews.
