Enspired Solutions tackles forever chemicals and the rigors of startup life

Michigan startup Enspired Solutions is on a mission to eliminate PFAS ´forever chemicals´ from water, leveraging scientific innovation and local support rather than chasing only financial returns.

Enspired Solutions, a Michigan-based startup founded by environmental toxicologist Denise Kay and chemical engineer Meng Wang, is on a determined quest to tackle the widespread issue of PFAS contamination in water. Known as ´forever chemicals´ due to their extreme resistance to natural breakdown, PFAS compounds pose a persistent health challenge across water supplies globally. Kay and Wang leveraged their environmental consulting backgrounds and insight into the risks of PFAS to develop technology aimed at breaking down these toxic molecules, offering hope for healthier water resources.

The company’s flagship product, the PFASigator—a machine roughly the size of two refrigerators—uses a combination of ultraviolet light and chemistry to destroy PFAS in contaminated water. Michigan proved to be a strategic location for Enspired Solutions, thanks to the state’s proactive PFAS regulation and supportive startup ecosystem, spearheaded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). The MEDC provided vital early-stage resources, including intellectual property consulting, financial modeling tools, fundraising guidance, and legal support, which empowered the founders to transform laboratory chemistry into a commercial-scale solution.

Enspired Solutions´ technology has garnered acclaim, securing awards from both the Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Defense, and demonstrating effectiveness across over 200 water samples, from groundwater and industrial wastewater to municipal sources. The company’s entrepreneurial journey, however, highlighted the realities of startup life: long hours, intrinsic motivation, and delayed financial rewards. Kay emphasized the importance of creativity, innovation, and resilience over formulaic approaches to success. While Enspired Solutions celebrates milestones like their first machine sale and major municipal contract, the founders’ advice to other entrepreneurs is clear—passion for problem-solving and a commitment to learning must fuel the difficult path of building impactful technology ventures.

DeepWeb-Bench tests limits of deep research models

DeepWeb-Bench is positioned as a tougher benchmark for evaluating whether frontier language models can handle real deep research tasks beyond existing tests. Results point to derivation and calibration, rather than retrieval, as the main weaknesses in current Artificial Intelligence systems.

Google adds conversational ads to Artificial Intelligence mode

Google is rolling out new ad features in Artificial Intelligence Mode aimed at helping businesses, especially smaller advertisers, appear in generative search experiences. The additions bring conversational responses, recommended business listings and lead-generation tools directly into search interactions.

Google shifts its scientific Artificial Intelligence focus

Google is presenting a broader vision for scientific Artificial Intelligence that leans more heavily on agentic, general-purpose systems while still maintaining specialized tools. The shift suggests changing priorities in how the company sees Artificial Intelligence contributing to research.

General-purpose Artificial Intelligence tackles open math problem

OpenAI’s GPT-5 reportedly helped mathematician Ernest Ryu solve a long-standing convex optimization problem now under formal verification. The result points to a broader shift from Artificial Intelligence as a math assistant toward Artificial Intelligence as a source of original research.

Suno faces lawsuit from The American Dollar

Suno has been sued by production duo The American Dollar, who allege its generative Artificial Intelligence music service has damaged their sync licensing business. The case could sharpen the fair use fight around whether Artificial Intelligence training causes direct market harm.
