CDAO announces partnerships with frontier Artificial Intelligence companies to advance national security

The Department of Defense is joining forces with top frontier Artificial Intelligence firms to accelerate integration of advanced technology into national security mission areas.

The chief digital and artificial intelligence office (CDAO) has announced the awarding of contracts to leading U.S.-based frontier Artificial Intelligence companies—Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI—in a significant move to accelerate the Department of Defense´s (DoD) adoption of advanced Artificial Intelligence capabilities. These partnerships are intended to propel DoD´s response to national security challenges by leveraging groundbreaking talent and the most sophisticated technology available in the United States. The selected firms are recognized for pioneering the development of the most advanced Artificial Intelligence models, conducting pivotal research, and addressing both the transformative benefits and inherent risks associated with frontier Artificial Intelligence technologies.

The contract awards, which have meaningful funding ceilings, will support the creation of agentic Artificial Intelligence workflows across various mission domains. This effort is designed to expand DoD´s access to, and operational experience with, cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence solutions. Through these partnerships, industry leaders gain deeper insight into mission requirements while the department increases its readiness and technological edge. Dr. Doug Matty, chief digital and Artificial Intelligence officer, highlighted the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on the department´s capacity to support warfighters and enhance its strategic advantage. He emphasized that integrating commercially available Artificial Intelligence solutions will drive rapid progress across domains ranging from warfighting and intelligence to business and enterprise information systems.

The DoD´s current strategy emphasizes a commercial-first approach, streamlining the process for accessing the latest generative Artificial Intelligence models for widespread use within the department. Key platforms such as the army´s enterprise large language model workspace, powered by Ask Sage, and other embedded tools within DoD data environments like Advana, Maven Smart System, and edge data mesh nodes, facilitate seamless Artificial Intelligence adoption across the enterprise. Furthermore, the DoD is collaborating with the general services administration to extend access to advanced Artificial Intelligence technologies across the federal government, maximizing buying power and resource allocation for production and compute capabilities. CDAO´s swift execution of its acquisition authority underscores the agility of DoD procurement to meet urgent operational and technological demands. The CDAO remains committed to advancing the use of data, analytics, and Artificial Intelligence from strategic boardrooms to front-line operations, signaling a new era of defense innovation.
