AMD ‘Zen 6’ ISA adds AVX512 FP16 and VNNI INT8 for Artificial Intelligence acceleration

AMD has published the ‘Zen 6’ (Znver6) instruction set manual for both consumer and enterprise audiences, listing a set of new vector and matrix instructions. The manual names AVX512_BMM, AVX512_FP16, AVX_NE_CONVERT, AVX_IFMA and AVX_VNNI_INT8 among other additions. Notably, the inclusion of AVX512_FP16 means 16-bit AVX-512 calculations are now documented for consumer-oriented desktop CPUs, which allows developers to accelerate applications and data paths that rely on AVX-512 capabilities.

Public compiler work has already tracked the hardware enablement. A series of GNU compiler patches add support for AVX512_BMM, AVX_NE_CONVERT, AVX_IFMA, AVX_VNNI_INT8 and AVX512_FP16 to GCC, confirming that open-source toolchains are being prepared to emit and optimize for the new instructions.
