AMD gains momentum as artificial intelligence chip contender with IBD rating upgrade

Advanced Micro Devices is gaining ground in the artificial intelligence chip sector after earning an IBD Relative Strength rating upgrade, reflecting robust earnings and revenue growth.

Advanced Micro Devices, traditionally known as a rival to Intel in the microprocessor market, has rapidly evolved into a formidable competitor to Nvidia in the burgeoning artificial intelligence chip arena. While Intel has slipped in maintaining its edge in artificial intelligence hardware, AMD has capitalized on the opportunity, making significant inroads in graphics and microprocessor technologies integral to artificial intelligence systems.

Recently, AMD received an upgrade to its Relative Strength (RS) Rating, climbing from 65 to 78. This boost was attributed to AMD´s consistent performance, marked by rising double-digit earnings and revenue growth over at least the last four quarters. Analysts note that leading stocks often exhibit an RS Rating of 80 or higher, placing AMD just shy of this critical benchmark. The company also boasts a 97 out of 99 EPS Rating, a Composite Rating of 95, and an A- Accumulation/Distribution Rating, indicating robust institutional buying by major funds and exchange-traded funds over recent weeks.

Financially, AMD´s latest quarterly results reflected a 55% surge in earnings per share to 96 cents, with revenue jumping 36%. The company’s prior three quarters saw EPS rises of 19%, 31%, and 42%, paired with sales gains of 9%, 18%, and 24%. Shares of AMD have been on a tear, climbing nearly 87% since early April and registering gains in seven of the last eight trading sessions. The chipmaker recently cleared a key technical buy point, though it is now considered extended for new purchases under the IBD Methodology, pointing to a need for new patterns or follow-on buying opportunities.

Within the fiercely competitive artificial intelligence chip landscape, AMD vies with not just Nvidia but also Broadcom and other leading manufacturers, leveraging decades of experience in both microprocessors and graphics processing units. AMD currently holds the No. 5 rank among 39 companies in the fabless semiconductor sector, trailing behind industry leader Arm Holdings. As artificial intelligence accelerates adoption across data centers, cloud computing, and enterprise applications, AMD´s continued technical and fundamental strength places it squarely on the radar of investors seeking exposure to the next wave of innovation in semiconductor technology.
