European researchers harness NVIDIA for AI-native wireless networks and 6G innovation

European institutions are building Artificial Intelligence-native wireless networks for 6G using NVIDIA technologies, spurring advanced telecom innovation and sustainable connectivity.

European telecommunications researchers are ramping up the development of 6G wireless networks by integrating Artificial Intelligence at the core of the technology, leveraging NVIDIA’s powerful platforms, tools, and libraries. The NVIDIA 6G Developer Program, launched last year, has catalyzed collaboration among more than 200 organizations across over 30 European nations, accelerating the transition toward 6G’s fully Artificial Intelligence-native architecture. This emerging platform aims to drive telecom innovation, introduce new services, deliver superior customer experiences, and promote sustainability countrywide.

Notable projects are unfolding across Europe: the UK government and NVIDIA are giving leading universities access to advanced Artificial Intelligence tools such as NVIDIA AI Aerial and Sionna for wireless research. Finland’s University of Oulu uses a real-time digital twin and synthetic lidar data in network experiments, expanding the capabilities of integrated sensing and communications. France’s OpenAirInterface, in partnership with NVIDIA, is fusing open-source radio access stacks with GPU-accelerated systems to pioneer Artificial Intelligence-driven radio access network research. In Germany, Fraunhofer HHI explores neuromorphic wireless cognition, and Rohde & Schwarz is setting benchmarks for neural receiver testing. Meanwhile, Swiss and UK institutions like ETH Zurich and University of Leeds experiment with machine learning-based signal processing and intelligent orchestration of network operations, often deploying NVIDIA-developed architectures like DUIDD and utilizing deep learning-powered agentic frameworks.

Europe’s historical leadership in wireless communications, dating back to GSM, is reinforced by EU-led initiatives such as the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking and the 6G Flagship project. These programs foster collaboration among academia, industry, and research to set global standards for Artificial Intelligence-native 6G networks. NVIDIA’s expansive portfolio underpins this activity, offering compute infrastructure, specialized libraries (including AI Aerial, Sionna, and CUDA-X), cloud and open-source options, and the full-stack flexibility essential for rapid telecom research and deployment. The company also supports education and skill-building through its Deep Learning Institute. To date, more than 2,000 researchers from 85 countries participate in the NVIDIA 6G Developer Program, which has already led to over 190,000 tool downloads and hundreds of technical paper citations. Collectively, these efforts are setting the stage for the next leap in intelligent, sustainable wireless connectivity across the continent.
