European Innovation Council Drives Deep-Tech Investment and Startup Growth

The European Innovation Council plays a pivotal role in funding disruptive technologies and supporting startups, with initiatives spanning deep tech, Artificial Intelligence, health, space, and green innovation.

The European Innovation Council (EIC), a key initiative by the European Commission, continues to establish itself as Europe’s leading deep-tech investor, driving innovation and fostering entrepreneurship across the continent. According to the newly published EIC Impact Report 2025, the EIC mobilized an impressive €2.6 billion in additional investment, affirming its position at the forefront of funding breakthrough technologies and high-potential startups. The Council’s efforts have led to more than 70 EIC-backed companies reaching ´centaur´ status—valued at over €100 million—with several surpassing the €500 million mark. These achievements underscore the EIC’s significant influence on scaling up companies in diverse sectors including health, digital, greentech, space, and construction.

The EIC provides a suite of funding instruments, such as the EIC Pathfinder for early-stage research, the EIC Transition for market-readiness initiatives, and the EIC Accelerator for scale-up investments, in addition to the STEP Scale Up programme which targets companies aiming for global leadership. Entrepreneurs and innovators can also seek recognition through EIC Prizes, while investors are invited to partner with the EIC Fund, which offers co-investment opportunities and adheres to established investment guidelines. As of early 2025, the EIC Trusted Investor Network includes 111 investors managing €336 billion, committed to supporting Europe’s deep-tech ecosystem alongside the EIC Fund.

Beyond financial backing, the EIC supports beneficiaries with Business Acceleration Services, connecting them with global partners, mentors, and innovation networks. Its governance structure comprises the EIC Board, Programme Managers specializing in strategic domains like quantum, health, and energy, Ambassadors promoting the EIC across EU member states, and expert Jury Members ensuring the selection of promising ventures. The EIC’s vibrant portfolio includes success stories such as Artificial Intelligence-enabled platforms for biodiversity monitoring, advanced microchip tools for genetic analysis, and innovations in textile manufacturing and satellite technology. With ongoing calls for tenders, new board applications, and events—including information sessions and recognition awards—the EIC continues to actively shape Europe’s innovation landscape and policy environment, reinforcing the region’s competitiveness in deep technology and entrepreneurship on a global scale.
