EU launches international digital strategy amid emerging Artificial Intelligence regulations

The European Union unveils an ambitious global digital strategy just as its Artificial Intelligence Act sets a new world benchmark for ethical tech regulation.

The European Union has introduced a new international digital strategy, signaling its intent to become a leading global partner in digital development. The strategy, launched on 5 June 2025 by the European Commission and the High Representative, outlines three core objectives: deepening digital partnerships worldwide, establishing a comprehensive EU Tech Business Offer, and attracting global digital talent. By focusing on these pillars, the EU aims to ensure a secure, open, and human-centric digital future.

This initiative coincides with the implementation of the European Union´s Artificial Intelligence Act, which entered into force on 1 August 2024. The Act is recognized as the world’s first comprehensive regulation of Artificial Intelligence technologies, adopting a risk-based framework that establishes new compliance obligations for organizations involved in developing, using, or procuring Artificial Intelligence systems. A webinar scheduled for 18 July 2025 will help stakeholders understand these new requirements, with an emphasis on leveraging open data alongside Artificial Intelligence for innovation and compliance.

Additionally, the EU is driving further digital transformation through public consultations and educational initiatives. For instance, citizens and organizations are invited to provide input on the European Data Union Strategy, which seeks to expand access to data critical for Artificial Intelligence advancements. Recent webinars, such as those on open marine data and public procurement, exemplify the EU’s effort to foster knowledge sharing and technological progress across various domains. Collectively, these actions reflect the EU’s broad commitment to responsible innovation, global partnership, and ensuring technology serves public good while safeguarding fundamental rights.
