Canonical Unveils Ubuntu 25.04 ´Plucky Puffin´ with Enhanced Developer Tools and Performance

Canonical launches Ubuntu 25.04 ´Plucky Puffin´, boasting improved developer tooling, support for confidential computing, and performance boosts for Artificial Intelligence on Intel GPUs.

Canonical has officially announced the release of Ubuntu 25.04, codenamed ´Plucky Puffin´, marking a significant update to its popular open-source operating system. The latest version introduces GNOME 48 as the default desktop environment, featuring triple buffering for smoother graphical performance and enhancements aimed at streamlining both installation and boot processes for users.

A key highlight of this release is the inclusion of a new ´devpack´ for Spring, which bolsters the developer experience by expanding the range of toolchains available directly within Ubuntu. This move underscores Ubuntu´s commitment to serving as a robust platform for software developers, providing ready-to-use, high-quality tools out of the box.

Ubuntu 25.04 also brings notable advancements in hardware enablement, thanks to collaboration with industry partners. Users leveraging Intel GPUs will benefit from optimizations specifically targeting Artificial Intelligence workloads, boosting computational performance. Additionally, support for confidential computing through AMD´s SEV-SNP technology is now available, allowing organizations to securely deploy sensitive Artificial Intelligence workloads at scale across both public cloud environments and private data centers.

The release further caters to ARM64 hardware enthusiasts with a dedicated, purpose-built ISO, emphasizing Canonical´s drive to extend Ubuntu’s reach across diverse architectures. As noted by Jon Seager, VP of Ubuntu Engineering at Canonical, these improvements make Ubuntu 25.04 a compelling choice for enterprises and developers seeking scalable, secure, and high-performing platforms for next-generation computing challenges.
