New analysis by insurer Hiscox of Companies House records shows registrations of technology companies using ´Artificial intelligence´ in their name climbed 1,321% between November 2022 and April 2025. The study filtered active UK companies incorporated between April 2020 and April 2025 by Standard Industrial Classification codes to focus on technology sectors such as software, IT services, data, telecommunications, and research and development. Hiscox reports a compound annual growth rate of 67.7% for Artificial intelligence themed company registrations over the five-year period, and monthly registrations in April 2025 were 13 times higher than in April 2020. If the current trend continues, the analysis suggests as many as 333 new Artificial intelligence tech companies could register in April 2026.
Geographically, London dominates in absolute numbers. Between April 2020 and April 2025, 1,689 technology companies with ´Artificial intelligence´ in their name were registered in London, representing 47% of the UK total for that period. Manchester recorded the next highest total with 53 registrations, followed by Birmingham with 49, Cardiff with 46, and Cambridge with 39. Several regional centres showed rapid expansion: Manchester posted an average year‑on‑year growth rate of 184%, Leeds 152%, Glasgow 133%, while Cardiff and Cambridge each recorded average annual growth of over 90%. The data indicate the pattern of new Artificial intelligence businesses is spreading beyond traditional hubs, even as London retains the largest share by count.
Hiscox highlights the risk landscape accompanying rapid sector growth, noting increased exposure to system errors and issues with underlying data as more companies adopt Artificial intelligence tools. Adam Atkins, head of technology at Hiscox, said the surge across cities underscores fast expansion beyond traditional hubs and that new professional indemnity cover is intended to help firms manage emerging risks. The findings draw on company name filters for references to ´AI´ and ´artificial intelligence´, registered addresses for city attribution, and external web analytics that estimate ChatGPT draws about 5.24 billion monthly visits, a level of engagement the report links to heightened interest in Artificial intelligence businesses. The study concludes that as registrations rise, discussions over business protections and employee skills in Artificial intelligence are likely to continue.
