Adobe Firefly video model brings Generative Extend and updates to Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io

Adobe’s new Firefly video model is moving into editors’ daily workflows across Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io. The limited public beta centers on Generative Extend and other Artificial Intelligence features aimed at speeding edits and collaboration.

Adobe is rolling out its Firefly video model alongside announcements at Adobe MAX 2024 in Miami, detailing how the technology will upgrade core tools in Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Frame.io. The company says it worked closely with professional editors over the past year to target everyday pain points where generative technology can help. Ashley Still, senior vice president of digital media at Adobe, said the Firefly video model is intended to make professional work faster, more efficient, and more visually polished. The model is available as a limited public beta, with access via a waitlist.

The headline addition is Generative Extend (beta) in Premiere Pro. Designed to solve common timeline problems, Generative Extend can seamlessly lengthen shots by synthesizing new frames at the head or tail of a clip, helping editors cover gaps, smooth transitions, or hold on a shot for better timing. The tool also extends audio by generating ambient room tone to hide audio cuts, and it is meant to work with a simple click-and-drag gesture so editors can stay focused on story and pacing. These features are powered by the Firefly video model and are available in Premiere Pro as a beta update starting now.

Beyond Generative Extend, Adobe is bringing a slate of improvements tailored to short-form and high-volume workflows. In Premiere Pro, a new color management system (beta) automatically transforms log footage from most cameras into HDR and SDR, aiming for more accurate skin tones, richer color, and improved dynamic range out of the box. Context-aware properties panels surface the most relevant controls to reduce hunting through menus, while performance upgrades deliver up to 3x faster ProRes exports and broader hardware acceleration. Adobe is also expanding native camera support across Canon, Sony, ARRI, and RED, and refreshing the app’s overall design.

In After Effects, an enhanced 3D workspace supports embedded 3D animations from imported models, and a deeper integration with Substance 3D lets artists send fully textured assets from Substance 3D Painter directly to After Effects with a new Send to After Effects feature. Frame.io is being overhauled as well: the all-new version aims to simplify complex collaboration with richer feedback loops, a custom metadata model for tagging assets and creating collections, and an expanded Camera to Cloud ecosystem that now includes Canon, Nikon, and Leica. Together, these updates signal Adobe’s push to weave Firefly’s generative capabilities into everyday post-production tasks while tightening the pipeline from set to editorial.
