IBM has unveiled its latest mainframe system, the LinuxONE Emperor 5, powered by the advanced Telum II processor featuring built-in Artificial Intelligence acceleration. The launch is a direct response to contemporary concerns around security, operational costs, and seamless Artificial Intelligence integration into enterprise architectures. Central to the platform, the Telum II processor includes a second-generation on-chip Artificial Intelligence accelerator tailored to improve predictive processing and expedite large language model operations for immediate transaction processing. In anticipation of accelerating generative Artificial Intelligence capabilities, IBM plans to introduce the Spyre Accelerator via PCIe card by late 2025. The Emperor 5 also debuts an updated Artificial Intelligence Toolkit optimized for the Telum II and supports early access to Red Hat OpenShift Artificial Intelligence and advanced virtualization, enabling unified management of both traditional virtual machines and containerized workloads.
Security is a major focus for the LinuxONE Emperor 5, incorporating features such as confidential computing, robust cryptographic protections, and NIST-approved post-quantum security algorithms. These advancements aim to protect sensitive Artificial Intelligence models and business data not only from current cybersecurity threats but also from quantum-era vulnerabilities. The platform allows enterprises to consolidate multiple server workloads onto a single mainframe, potentially reducing total cost of ownership by as much as 44% over five years compared to x86 server alternatives, while sustaining a high availability service level with 99.999999% uptime as claimed by IBM.
The Emperor 5 supports popular enterprise Linux distributions, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), and Canonical Ubuntu Server, enhancing flexibility for diverse IT environments. Tina Tarquinio, IBM Z and LinuxONE chief product officer, underscores the system´s transformative potential for clients aiming to unlock the full capabilities of Linux and Artificial Intelligence, optimize datacenters, and future-proof their infrastructure. LinuxONE Emperor 5 offers pathways for organizations working on intelligent business applications, regulatory-compliant workloads, infrastructure consolidation, or gearing up for digital transformation, setting a new benchmark in mainframe computing.
