Huawei Unveils Ascend 910D Artificial Intelligence Chip to Rival Nvidia

Huawei is accelerating its push for semiconductor independence with the new Ascend 910D chip, aiming to challenge Nvidia’s dominance in Artificial Intelligence hardware.

Huawei Technologies has embarked on an ambitious initiative to bolster China´s capabilities in artificial intelligence hardware, unveiling development of the Ascend 910D chip, designed to compete directly with Nvidia´s advanced processors. This project forms part of a broader national strategy to reduce reliance on U.S. technology, particularly as Washington´s export restrictions continue to impede China´s access to cutting-edge semiconductor components and Artificial Intelligence systems.

The Ascend 910D chip represents Huawei´s most significant effort yet to close the performance gap with Nvidia, specifically targeting applications in high-end artificial intelligence model training. Development and initial testing are underway in close collaboration with leading Chinese technology firms, with the first prototype batches scheduled for evaluation as early as late May 2025. If successful, the 910D could become a vital domestic alternative to Nvidia’s H100—chips which have been blocked from export to Chinese consumers since 2022 on national security grounds.

This move builds on the foundation established by Huawei’s previous Ascend 910B and 910C chips but aims to deliver unprecedented performance and autonomy for China´s burgeoning tech industry. While the Ascend 910D readies for validation, Huawei is also preparing to ramp up mass production of the 910C, ensuring stable supply for domestic markets while next-generation options mature. These advances not only address immediate demand but also signify a pivotal shift in global Artificial Intelligence hardware competition. Despite the strategic importance, Huawei and Nvidia have yet to release specifics on the anticipated performance benchmarks or commercial deployment timelines for the new chip.
